Dual-Diagnoses: Substance Use and Misuse in Individuals with IDD

When:  Jan 18, 2017 from 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM (ET)

Dual-Diagnoses Webinar Series Overview

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities may also have mental health and substance use issues that are overlooked. At the same time, traditional behavioral health resources and interventions don’t always take into account the unique needs of someone with I/DD.

Do you have the resources and information you need to support the individuals who rely on your services in the most person-centered and holistic ways?

The American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR) and NADD, an association for persons with developmental disabilities and mental health needs, are proud to partner together to offer this six-part webinar series that covers topics ranging from relaxation training for individuals with I/DD to supporting psychological resilience in staff.

Session Description

Though substance (ab)use and addiction sometimes are seen as a condition afflicting only a small subgroup of socially marginalized persons, these stereotypes are far from reality. The use and misuse of psychoactive substances such as alcohol, cannabis, and other illicit drugs is widespread across society, and affects a wide variety of people including persons with IDD.

In this webinar we will focus on screening and assessment of substance use, refferal to addiction services, and substance use treatment strategies, including adaptations that need to be made to accommodate individuals with IDD.

Speaker

Joanne VanDerNagel, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist in The Netherlands, specialized in substance use disorder in individuals with intellectual disabilities. She has developed an assessment tool, several treatment protocols, written a full book, published scientific papers, and lectured both in the Netherlands and abroad on this topic.
